poiesis is rock band from Southern California. I’m not going to try and sound all official and talk about us in the third person, I just want to tell you a little bit about us. This is Matt writing. I play guitar and sing. Jon, the drummer, and I started this band when we were in college, in about January 2004. Our friend Pat Conklin played bass with us at that time. About a week before our first show we had to come up with a name because the venue wanted to publicize. We couldn’t come up with anything we liked, so we settled on this Greek word “poiesis” that I had come across in some of the writings in a philosophy class. It has many different meanings, but the one I like the most is something like “unveiling truth through art.” While it’s an extremely difficult name for people to comprehend when you try to yell it in their ear at a loud club, the meaning hits on what we are about as a band. We’re not playing these songs for ourselves (though we do have a lot of fun), but to point to issues and truths that are much bigger than us. We want to use the gifts we’ve been given to point to hope, redemption, and beauty, but also to the pain, oppression, and injustice that too many people are experiencing in our world. After the three of us spent a summer in San Diego, Pat decided to stay down there while Jon and I moved back to L.A. So we recruited an old friend of Jon’s, Aaron, to play bass and the occasional keys. We were having great fun playing shows sporadically when Paul, whom we all respected immensely as both a man and a guitar player, expressed interest in joining us. Needless to say, the interest was mutual, and our days as a power trio were over. In the past year we’ve grown together musically and personally as we recorded an EP called Echoes of Hope and played live more frequently. Currently we are excited for a new phase in our development as poiesis as we begin playing a weekly gig at a place called The Hub in Garden Grove, CA.
